Context and Problem
Across India, artisan communities like carpenters, blacksmiths, and craft workers have been practicing their skills for generations. Their work carries cultural and economic value, but in today’s world, many of them struggle to earn a stable income. For example, an artisan may create high quality handcrafted products but only sell within their village because they depend on word of mouth. There are a few key challenges: 1. limited market access, so they cannot reach bigger customers 2. low digital literacy, so they cannot use tools like UPI or online platforms 3. lack of awareness about government schemes that could support them 4. very little visibility, so their stories and work remain unseen Because of this, many artisans earn less than they should, and younger generations are slowly moving away from these traditional skills.
Approach & Solution
HunarSetu is designed as a bridge between traditional skills and modern opportunities. The idea is simple: help artisans turn their skills into sustainable businesses The platform focuses on three things: - visibility through storytelling - learning through simple and practical modules - access to digital tools and markets Instead of just giving support, HunarSetu helps artisans become: independent, confident, and digitally capable
How it works?
The solution is built step by step so that it is easy to adopt. Step 1: Awareness and Learning A website is created where artisans can: - read simple guides - learn basic business skills - understand how to use digital tools For example, an artisan can learn how to set up WhatsApp Business or accept digital payments. Step 2: Digital and Market Access Artisans are guided to: - create online profiles - upload product photos - list products on platforms like Amazon or Meesho or HunarSetu For example, instead of selling only locally, an artisan can now sell products to customers in other cities. Step 3: Visibility and Collaboration The platform creates opportunities like: - exhibitions and local events - partnerships with NGOs and communities - storytelling through digital platforms For example, an artisan can showcase their work at an event and connect directly with buyers.
Impact and Outcome
The project aims to create both economic and social impact. 1. Artisans get access to larger markets 2. Income opportunities increase 3. Awareness about schemes improves 4. Traditional skills are preserved At a community level: more people become self reliant and skilled In simple terms: better income, better visibility, and stronger cultural value.
